A $5 ESP32 Brings Dead Bose Speakers Back to Life
On May 6, Bose shut down the SoundTouch cloud, killing the six internet radio preset buttons on speakers that originally cost $400 to $1,500. A developer named Tostmann responded with SixBack: a ~$5 ESP32 stick that emulates just enough of the defunct Bose protocol to bring those buttons back. The project landed on Hackaday and now has a one-click web flasher at sixback.io.
The mechanism is the interesting part. Instead of relying on DNS redirects at the router, SixBack exploits a diagnostic interface built into the Bose hardware that lets you rewrite the cloud server address. The ESP32 rewrites it to point at itself, and the speaker never knows the difference. After WiFi provisioning, SixBack auto-discovers every SoundTouch unit on the LAN and migrates them over, preserving all existing presets. One stick, every speaker, no subscription.
This is the failure mode that the shift from maximum functionality to maximum well-being is supposed to prevent. Hardware that worked fine for years, bricked because it depended on a server it never needed. A $5 chip can undo the damage precisely because the dependency was never structurally necessary. The speaker had everything it needed locally the whole time. What if the next generation of hardware just started there?
