A $5 ESP32 Stick Just Replaced Bose's Entire Cloud
Bose shut down its SoundTouch cloud service on May 6, bricking the six internet radio preset buttons on speakers that cost $400 to $1,500. A developer named Tostmann built SixBack: an open-source ESP32 firmware that emulates just enough of the dead Bose cloud protocol to bring those buttons back to life. The entire fix lives on a ~$5 microcontroller.
The clever part is how it sidesteps the usual DNS redirect hack. SixBack exploits a diagnostic interface on the Bose unit itself to rewrite the cloud server address, pointing the speaker at the ESP32 sitting on your local network. The speaker reboots once, finds what it thinks is Bose's server, and resumes working as if nothing happened. Existing presets are preserved automatically. One stick handles every SoundTouch on your LAN, auto-discovering them and migrating each one off the dead cloud in about sixty seconds.
This is the failure mode that defines an entire generation of consumer electronics: products that work perfectly until a company decides they don't. A $5 chip now outperforms Bose's entire cloud infrastructure for the one job those buttons were built to do.
