A Solar-Powered E-Ink Navigator That Just Points You Home
Rishabh Jain built TrailNAV, a palm-sized navigation device that runs on solar power and works completely offline. Published on Instructables and featured by Hackster.io and Seeed Studio, the project uses a XIAO ESP32-C6, a 2.7-inch e-ink display, GPS, and a digital compass to do one thing: point you toward your destination and tell you how far away it is.
The hardware choices are all deliberate subtractions. E-ink draws power only during screen updates, so the display stays visible in direct sunlight with near-zero standby drain. A QMC5883L magnetometer provides real-time heading. The NEO-M8N GPS module handles positioning without any cell signal. A small solar panel feeds an MPPT charging module that tops up a 3.7V Li-ion cell continuously. The whole thing fits in a hand-cut PVC enclosure measuring 10 by 6.5 centimeters, with three tactile buttons for input. No touchscreen, no app, no network dependency.
This is what a tool looks like when you strip it to one essential function. Modern GPS devices can do a hundred things. TrailNAV does one: it tells you which direction to walk. The solar panel means you might never plug it in. The e-ink means you can read it at noon on a glacier. Maybe the most interesting question about a navigation device that does less on purpose is what it implies about every other device in your pocket. How many of them would be better if they worked this way?
