TrailNAV Points You Home With Sunlight and Silence

Rishabh Jain built TrailNAV, a solar-powered handheld navigator that runs for days without a cell signal, a charger, or a map app. The build uses a Seeed XIAO ESP32-C6, a NEO-M8N GPS module, a QMC5883L digital compass, and a 2.7-inch Waveshare e-ink display. The project is fully open-source on Instructables and GitHub.

The design philosophy is deliberate reduction. TrailNAV doesn't try to replace your phone's navigation. It points you toward a saved waypoint and gets out of the way. The e-ink display stays readable in direct sunlight where LCDs wash out, and because it only draws power during screen updates, the battery stretches across days of continuous use. A small solar panel on the back trickle-charges the Li-ion cell. Three physical buttons handle everything: scroll destinations, select, navigate.

The whole device is a bet that the most useful outdoor tool is the quietest one. A compass that points you home and keeps pointing for days, powered by the sun, with zero infrastructure underneath it.
